What does success mean to you?

Picture yourself 2 years from now, how will you know if you are successful in this role (your personal measurement of success, not the companies!).

This is one of the questions that I include in the pre-work for my coaching sessions.

We all have different definitions of success and those definitions change over time. It’s an important question to ask yourself when changing jobs. How will you know if it’s the right role unless you know what success looks like for you?

Success can mean many things; perhaps you are looking for a flexible position that allows you to spend more time with family, it might be having a sense of purpose, maybe it’s a mix of these things along with a certain salary that allows you to save for a mortgage?

In Dr Maureen Gaffney’s fabulous book; Your One Wild and Precious Life, she talks about the different stages in life and what is important to us at the various stages in our personal and work lives. She suggests as we move through our lives priorities change; what was important to us in our in 20s may no longer be important in our 40s. What are your thoughts on this?

Some useful questions to help you define your personal measure of success?

What makes me happy?

Where and with who do I like to spend my time?

What is my purpose?

What are my values?

Where have I already seen success in my life?

What lessons have I learned from those successes?

What have I learned about myself from those areas?

Answering these questions will help you understand what success means to you and understand how you will measure that success.

Invest in your team’s growth, and you’ll see them—and your business—thrive!
